Sometimes you just need some home cookin’. And unless you’re Ree Drummond (a.k.a. The Pioneer Woman),you’re probably not much good at whipping up chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes and gravy in a jiffy. That type of intense craving of country cookin’, my Okie friends, calls for a visit to The Bros. Houligan.
Bros. Houligan has been around Tulsa since 1987 and has two great locations: 15th & Atlanta (just east of Lewis), and 61st & Mingo. What started off as a casual bar has expanded into a couple of large, cozy restaurants, serving everything from true “Okie” dishes like Deep Fried Chicken Livers and Deep Fried Catfish, to healthier options like chicken salads and Grilled Salmon. And of course, they have plenty of options for the people like me who prefer a dish somewhere between a heart attack on a plate and rabbit food, like Chicken Tenders and steaks.
When you visit Bros. Houligan, you can expect to eat a boatload of food. On my last visit there, we ordered an appetizer of Deep Fried Mozzarella, which was devoured almost as soon as I took this picture. My husband selected the Chicken Tenders dinner with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy and apple sauce. Somehow we didn’t manage to get a picture of the apple sauce, but it was so delicious and perfectly cinnamon-induced to my liking.
I ordered a classic Cheeseburger, served on a perfectly toasted bun, with a side of Waffle Fries (which they refer to as “Cottage Fries.”) (Click here to check out the entire Bros. Houligan menu).
Bros. Houligan is a great place to go with a large group. Although they don’t take reservations, it’s the type of place that it’s OK to be a little loud and goofy. The location on 15th st. has a private area that is perfect for large groups.
Let me know what you think of this Tulsa eatery!
